Jacob Leary is a multi-disciplinary artist with a practice spanning various mediums, including painting, prints, video and installation. A tendency toward the dynamic has fed his preoccupation with assemblage, resulting in artworks that operate within seriality as well as a tendency toward change. Leary's most recent works place an emphasis on the aesthetic realm of appearances, the world of surfaces (glimmers, sparkles and reflections) and notions of excess.
He completed his Masters of Fine Arts at the Hobart School of Art, undertaking research exploring the exponential growth of technology within contemporary culture. He has been invited to participate in a range of high-profile exhibitions and initiatives, including Hobart Current: Liberty 2020, in conjunction with the City of Hobart and the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery.
Leary has won numerous awards and grants, including the John Fries Memorial Prize (2012); he is currently completing his PhD at the University of Tasmania, exploring Weird Formalism in contemporary practice. Jacob is a board member, the secretary, and the gallery manager of the Hobart A.R.I Good Grief
